General Description
The Utah RLE format was developed by Spencer Thomas at the University of Utah Department of Computer Science. The first version appeared around 1983. The Utah RLE format was developed mainly to support the Utah Raster Toolkit, which is widely distributed in source form on the Internet.
The default extension for Utah RLE files is RLE.

PMView supports the following types of Utah RLE files:
GRAYSCALE 8 bits, no colormap
MAPPEDGRAY 8 bits, 1 channel colomap
PSEUDOCOLOR 8 bits, 3 channel colormap
TRUECOLOR 24 bits, 3 channel colormap
DIRECTCOLOR 24 bits, no colormap
