Full Version: Reregister file associations

I searched on "association" in both the general and Windoze sections, and received no hits.

NS 4.74 no longer has (at least one) file association set to PMView. Short of rerunning the install program for PMV, or manually setting each association, how do I reset all of the appropriate associations to PMV.

Al,

Rerun the PMView installation. It's easy and safe and does not alter any of your PMView's settings. (Don't uninstall, just run the installation again).

I was hoping that there was a utility, such as makedefv.exe, for the Win platform.

No, there is no such utility. One of the resons for this is because it's so easy to just run the installation once again. No settings are lost and the installer will remember your previous settings. All you need to do is to run the installer EXE and then keep pressing the [Next>] button until everything is done...

Doesn't it seem odd to you, to have to keep a 3mb file around to fix an occasional association problem?

I'm not complaining, as I've got lots of (organized) storage, and a high-bandwidth connection, but those folks who don't have the room to store an extra 3mb install file, and who have to pay to download it again -- well, it's those I feel sorry for.

[I have to agree with other listers: the text-entry area on this website form is much too small.]

Having 3mb "around" is probably better than adding 50-100kB to pmview.exe and making PMView's startup even slower...

Having a separate program is also a problem - nonone knows it's there. Thus, the only good alternative is to add this function to PMView.

Greetings:

In response to this problem, I've written a VERY small program (16k) that restores all associations to PMView. I've only tested it with NT 4.0. I'd be interested to see if it worked under 9x/2000/XP.

IE users can "Run Program From This Location" while Opera and Netscape/Mozilla users will have to save the file somewhere (your desktop is a good place) and then run it.

It's a free program which requires NO install or support DLLs. One note, though. You MUST have PMView installed before running the program, or it will mess up current file associations.

The program works great btw. I just do not understand why a simply "filetype association" dialog that can select/deselect certain types is not within the PMView program to begin with. This is probably the only graphic viewer I know of that does not have this.
