How do I make the background of a GIF transparent?

First convert the image to 256 colors (this is the maximum # of colors allowed for a GIF). Color->Convert to->Indexed 256 colors

Assuming that the color you want to be transparent is the most used color in the image, then its index is zero (0). Otherwise, use Color->Edit palette to ficure out what the index is. (The top-left index is 0 and the bottom right is 255).

Finally select File->Save As. Select the GIF format. Press the Options button and enable "Transparent index".
