Make sure the Windows Display Settings are set to scale 100%. If the display scaling is not set to 100%, then the problem you describe will show. PMView currently only supports capture of Windows Screens without scaling (i.e. 100%).

Thanks,
Peter

QUOTE (Graham @ Sep 10 2017, 10:03 AM) *
I'd like to know too. Lack of release notes kind of makes me suspicious that it isn't official, and possibly contains malware.

Anyone actually tried it?

Graham.

It's official. The OS/2 v3.80 is identical to v3.79.

The Windows version of v3.80 addresses a problem that appeared with the initial release of the Windows 10 Creator's update. (It was apparently not only PMView that was affected by this problem, and Microsoft later also addressed this with an update, with the effect that very few people actually need the v3.80 release).

Thanks,
Peter

QUOTE (skydvrz @ Oct 11 2017, 06:01 PM) *
PMView is a great product! I have been a licensed user for many years - all the way back to the OS/2 days. I use it almost daily.

I have a dual monitor setup where the desktop spans the two monitors. I can capture the screen of the monitor PMView is sitting on, but I can't capture the opposite monitor. I tried straddling the two screens - no help. I tried capturing Area of Screen and the selection box won't allow me to straddle the two monitors - only the one PMView is sitting on.

Is there some trick I am missing?

I am using PMView Pro v3.80, 64-bit version on Win10 Pro-64. The monitors are set up for 1680x1050. The display adapter is a NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GTS

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

PMView has multi-monitor support. However, it is limited to capturing one monitor at a time. (You need to move the PMView main window into the monitor you want to capture).

Capturing multiple monitors at the same time is no easy task since Windows lets you run the monitors at different sizes and resolutions.

Thanks,
Peter

If I accidentally click to expand "Homegroup" under Open->File (or ->Save for that matter). then PMView fails (as in "PMView PRO has stopped working")

I seem to recall that this started when I upgraded my home PC from an old XP system to Win7 Ultimate on a much faster system. I never had much use for "Homegroup" though. I'm just tired of clicking the wrong "+" and having to start from scratch again. Both x64 and x32 versions fail (3.75 right now)

I've registered this problem with Technical Support, but thought I'd ask here in case anyone has a workaround.

It is quite probable that I've not setup a "Homegroup", but having PMView fail is a bit extreme...

This will be fixed in v3.77

Peter

What version did you update from? There was a major bug fix in v3.68 that solved a serious multithreading issue present ever since PMView v3.00. It is possible that this may cause issues on some systems with drivers that are not properly multithreaded, but it has not yet been confirmed.

Please e-mail me (peter@pmview.com) and I will send you links to download v3.67 and v3.68 so that we can see if it's the bugfix that is causing the issue. If this is the case, I will try to solve it, or at least provide a setting to disable the fix. If not, I'll have to send you older versions until we find what version it is that causes the slowdown.

This is the bug fix in v3.68 that possibly could cause hardware/driver specfic problems, although not yet confirmed by anyone:
QUOTE
PMView crashes for no apparent reason on SMP/MultiCore hardware.
The crashes are spontaneous and the problem is not easily repeatable. The cause of
the problem is that one of the underlying IBM Open Class pointer templates is not
thread safe. In this version thread safety has been added to the template class,
and the longstanding issue with spontaneous crashes is now resolved.

Peter

I am trying to get used to Windows 7 lunacy, but on it the current version of PMView keeps telling me I don't have permission to access pictures on backup drives (something I see every other minute under Win 7).

I discovered that older versions of PMView do not have this issue.

But the installer software, assuming there is some, is on the crashed computer. And I haven't been able to find an installer for an older version. Aren't these stored somewhere?

I can provide older versions if you e-mail me. However, first try to disable Windows thumbnail caching. If older PMView verisons work, that's probably the culprit.

Right click on the white area in the File Open dialog and set Thumbnail Provider->PMView Only. That will probably solve the problem if versions prior to v3.70 worked fine.

Al,

Do you think there's a chance that this problem occurred with the release of v3.68?

v3.68 fixed a 10-year old bug with thread synchronization. This is the only change I can imagine would have an impact on the the FOC behavior. It is possible that the added synchronization brings out new problems if underlying drivers are not well behaved when accessed concurrently by the same application. The added synchronization in v3.68 combined with unexpected resource locking by drivers may possibly result in a deadlock situation.

If/when you have time to try this out, please e-mail me and I will send you links to download v3.67 and v3.68. Comparing these two should give you a clear indication whether the problem is caused by the synchronization added in v3.68 or not.

Another user reported seeing the same problem as you when he upgraded from v3.66 to v3.72. Apparently the problem appeared sometime between these two versions. To me, v3.68 looks like the most likely one, but I need to get this verified before I can work on a solution.

Now, in your original post you said you were going to backlevel to v3.70 which made it sound like this bug is new in v3.71. If this is the case, can you confirm that v3.70 indeed works fine and v3.71 does not? My thinking is that v3.70 has the same problem and that you need to go back all the way to v3.67 before the problem goes away. If I can get this confirmed, then we're half the way to solving the issue...

Thanks,
Peter

I have now fixed the bug. It turned out that the problem already happens when loading (reading) the specific PNG file in question. PMView v3.7x does not handle a transparent color definition (TRNS) correctly for grayscale PNG files (color type #0) that have fewer than 8 bits. If paying attention, this is obvious since the transparent checkerboard pattern is not showing after loading the file.

Once loading was fixed, I also noticed that PMView did not optimize saving of grayscale files and always saved the files at 8 bits which caused the file to be almost double the size compared to the original. The design in PMView was right, but due to a coding bug the optimization was never done. Once the problem was fixed, the file saved as 493 bytes. (Original was 507 bytes).

So, in short, these issues only occur for some not-so-common PNG files. For the bug to appear, the PNG needs to be of color type #0 (grayscale), it needs to have a bitcount of 1, 2, or 4, and it needs to use a transparent color (TRNS). If the PNG file falls into this specific category, then the alpha channel will not be correctly loaded by PMView and transparency is not displayed correctly. If now saving the file, the incorrect alpha channel will result in the file being saved as a 8 bit grayscale file with 8 bit alpha channel (i.e. a 16-bit PNG) just like the OP noted.

These two bugs will be fixed in v3.73.
